Dr Anneke de Rouw is a senior agronomist with wide experience in farming system research and weed ecology. Her scientific field is the evolution of smallholder farming systems, particularly those systems that rely on the recycling of the natural resources to sustain productivity and combat weeds. Educated at Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands, she holds a PhD in Vegetation science. She worked for 10 years (1978-1990) in Ivory Coast mostly in the Wageningen Agricultural University programme « Analysis and design of land use systems in the Taï region, South-west Ivory Coast ». Entering IRD in 1991 (formerly ORSTOM), she was posted in Niger for 6 years (1991-2000), and worked on the analysis of rain-fed millet-based farming systems in the Sahel, by means of on-farm experiments at different spatial and temporal scales. Then she was posted in Laos for 6 years (2001-2006) working in the MSEC programme (Managing soil Erosion Consortium) on the topic « Smallholder farming systems on steep slopes in southeast Asia ». Since 2006 she is posted in France where she joined the Institut d’Ecologie et des Sciences de l’Environnement de Paris (iEES Paris). She continues to carry out fieldwork by means of short and long-term missions for MSEC in Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, as well as in Nepal in the programme « Quantifying the water resources in the high- and middle- mountain catchments ». She supervised the work of many students, European, African and Lao including five PhD students.
